For many new carriers the audit never visits the yard. FMCSA selects the audit type — at your place of business, or electronically — and tells you by phone or mail. The electronic kind lives or dies on one upload. Here is what the letter asks for, in its own order.

Read this first, because the internet gets it wrong: there is no single standard submission deadline printed in the regulation. FMCSA's notification letter sets yours. The letters carriers receive require submission through the safety audit website no later than about 20 days from the date of the letter. Treat your letter as law. Count from the date printed on it. Do not borrow a number from any website, including this one.
Registration moved to FMCSA's new MOTUS system in 2026. The audit upload did not move with it: electronic audit documents go through the New Entrant Web System (NEWS), or by mail or fax where FMCSA allows. FMCSA tells you which kind of audit you were selected for.
Short list, long shadows: the one driver's file stands in for every driver's file, and the 30 days stand in for your whole operation. Auditors sample — they do not census. Which is why the submission is really an argument that the rest of the company looks like the part you sent.
Twenty days is generous for a company whose paper is already built, and brutal for one building it from a shoebox. The audit-day pack in the Audit & DQ Kit (§9) assembles these nine in advance — with the countdown keyed to your letter's date. The free readiness checker tells you which of the nine would embarrass you today.
