EXAMINER'S CALL
The checker reads your verdict. The Kit gets you through the exam: documentation packets for your condition, the two 45-day form clocks run as a calendar, the official medication form packet, waiting-period calendars, failure recovery, and the examiner phone script.
Federal source: 49 CFR 391.41(b)(9); FMCSA Medical Examiner's Handbook 2024, Psychiatry · Rules checked October 2026
The rule (49 CFR 391.41(b)(9)) sets a functional standard — no mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with safe operation — and names no diagnosis list. The Handbook recommends waiting periods after acute episodes (for example, about 6 months of stability after ECT), evaluates stability and medication side effects, and treats active psychosis as certification-not-recommended. Everything else is individualized: the condition's stability and the medication's effects, documented.
There is no list of banned diagnoses to check yourself against, because FMCSA never wrote one. Examiners decide case by case on stability and side effects — which makes your treating clinician's documentation the deciding artifact.
Bring a letter from your treating mental-health clinician covering: diagnosis stability, time since any acute episode, medication side effects relevant to alertness, and their judgment on safe operation. Bring it even if you expect no questions — it answers them pre-emptively.
This question is decided by the federal text together with its published advisory criteria — clocks, thresholds, and specialist files. The verdict above follows the cited criteria; your documentation is what proves you meet them.
Only a certified medical examiner on the National Registry can certify you. FreightVerdict reads the published federal standards — it does not certify, diagnose, or treat, and nothing here is medical advice.
