What the federal text says

The federal standard has two doors: perceive a forced whisper at not less than 5 feet in the better ear (with or without a hearing aid), OR an audiometric average hearing loss of no more than 40 decibels at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz in the better ear (with or without a hearing aid).

What that means for you

A hearing aid is allowed for both tests. Passing either door — the whisper or the audiogram — meets the standard.

What moves the outcome

Bring your hearing aid and spare batteries. If you fail both doors, do not stop reading: the federal hearing exemption on the next page is a live program.

Which mode is this?

This question is decided by the federal text itself. The verdict above is computed from the cited words — your examiner is bound by the same text.

Only a certified medical examiner on the National Registry can certify you. FreightVerdict reads the published federal standards — it does not certify, diagnose, or treat, and nothing here is medical advice.
