Your medical certificate and your CDL are two documents with one fuse between them. When the medical status lapses, the license itself starts a countdown — and the countdown's length is set by your state.
The checker reads your verdict. The Kit gets you through the exam: documentation packets for your condition, the two 45-day form clocks run as a calendar, the official medication form packet, waiting-period calendars, failure recovery, and the examiner phone script.
Federal rules require states to maintain your medical certification status on your CDL record and to downgrade the license when you are not medically certified (49 CFR 383.73 frames the process; the outer frame is 60 days). States set their own operational timelines inside that frame — some notify and act in as little as about 10 days after a lapse. There is no grace period for driving: with an expired or denied certificate, operating a commercial motor vehicle is prohibited from the first day, whatever the downgrade timeline is.
Find your state's number before you ever need it: your state licensing agency publishes its medical-certification timeline. And run your renewals the way the kit's Certificate Renewal Countdown runs them — exam booked 30 days out, forms inside their 45-day windows, so the fuse never starts. The countdown is the bonus chapter (§11) of the Medical Card Kit.
