What the federal text says

The standard requires the ability to recognize the colors of traffic control signals and devices — red, green, and amber. The rule names the ability, not a test method: examiners may use different screening tools (plate tests and others), and a driver who fails one screening method may still demonstrate signal-color recognition another way. The alternative vision standard (§391.44) also requires color recognition, so it is not a bypass for this element.

What that means for you

What matters is recognizing signal colors in practice, not passing one particular plate book. Method and demonstration decide it — examiner territory, with a functional core.

What moves the outcome

If you know you are color-deficient, say so up front and ask how the examiner tests it. If you failed a plate test elsewhere but can reliably name signal colors, that demonstration is the evidence — a specialist's functional color assessment can document it.

Which mode is this?

This question is decided by the federal text together with its published advisory criteria — clocks, thresholds, and specialist files. The verdict above follows the cited criteria; your documentation is what proves you meet them.

Only a certified medical examiner on the National Registry can certify you. FreightVerdict reads the published federal standards — it does not certify, diagnose, or treat, and nothing here is medical advice.
